When people discuss their dream Alaskan vacations, destinations like Juneau, Anchorage, and the mesmerizing glaciers often steal the spotlight. However, allow me to share a well-kept secret: Skagway, a charming and captivating town, deserves a prominent place on your travel list.
At the outset, when I booked my trip, Skagway wasn’t top of mind. I had a few must-visit places on my checklist, but Skagway turned out to be a delightful surprise. Despite its diminutive size, with a year-round population of less than a thousand residents, Skagway exudes an irresistible charm. While there may not be a plethora of activities to fill your days, I found myself yearning for an extra day in this enchanting town, eager for more of its unique offerings.
White Pass Scenic Railway
While planning my Skagway adventure, I couldn’t escape the buzz surrounding the White Pass Scenic Railway. It seemed like every travel resource I consulted raved about this experience. Skepticism led me to further research, hoping to stumble upon something “better.” But, as fate would have it, I circled back and decided to book this excursion—a choice that lead to what would later prove to be one of the highlights of my journey.
While researching, I encountered a little tip that suggested sitting on the left side during the ascent. It’s true that the conductor assured us that both sides offered incredible views since the train completes a full loop. However, if you have the opportunity, I wholeheartedly recommend choosing the left side. As you chug along, there’s informative commentary that complements the breathtaking scenery, making it an even more unforgettable experience.
Calling it “scenic” almost feels like an understatement. The views were breathtaking. Seeing a mountain pass by just to be greeted by another kept me nose glued to the window. Once you are out of city limits you are allowed to go outside to take it all in. I waited until we were close to 1500 ft elevation to go out. It was exhilarating. The fresh air immediately hits your face, the terrains continues to speed by, and you look down and realize your fate is being determined by the sturdiness of the metal platform. I had such a gut feeling of fear initially followed by excitement. These emotions battled for the entire time I spent out there in the most thrilling way.
The views made the trip to Alaska worth it. To all the fellow Millennials it will help you live out your experience of heading to Hogwarts. The railway takes you up and through the mountains. Past Valleys as you reach over 2000 ft in about an hour. I hightly recommend that you take this ride of a lifetime.
Skagway Brewing Company
Once the railway made its way back down it stopped in the downtown area to let people off to explore. We headed straight to Skagway Brewing Company to have what they are known for: fish and chips.
They clearly expect people to order this the most because we received ours just a few minutes after we ordered. I wish I waited for it to cool down but I went right in which turned out to be well worth it! We didn’t need much time here but it was a great stop. The next time I venture here I will definitely try more things on their menu.
Yukon Heath’s Popcorn Emporium
If you happen to share my fiance’s enthusiasm for popcorn, then Yukon Heath’s Popcorn Emporium is an absolute must visit during your Skagway adventure. Here, you’ll discover a cornucopia of delectable popcorn flavors that span the entire spectrum of taste bud temptation. From the sweet, mouthwatering delights that will satisfy your sugary cravings to the savory, salty morsels that make the perfect snack companion, and even the cheesy explosions of flavor that leave you wanting more—Yukon Heath’s has it all.
One of the most fantastic perks of this popcorn haven is that, if you’re cruising into Skagway, you’re not just limited to enjoying these treats on land. You have the unique privilege of taking your chosen popcorn treasures with you back onto the ship!
Klondike Doughboy
Now, if you happen to be more like me and find yourself giddy at the thought of sugar-coated carbs, then Klondike Doughboy is a destination you simply cannot miss! Here, you’ll indulge in mouthwatering fried dough. They have perfected the craft of this fair favorite.
Klondike Doughboy doesn’t just stop at serving up delectable treats. They also offer a selection of charming little trinkets and souvenirs. So while you wait for your order you can pick up some items for yourself or those back at home.
Back Alley Rock Shop
It’s off the beaten path and feels like you’ve entered into a different realm as you venture down a quaint alley to discover this tranquil oasis; but the moment you enter, you’re surrounded by thousands of glistening crystals. This was the cherry on top of my Skagway adventure. If you’re fascinated by the mystique of crystals and the world of metaphysical wonders, then this hidden gem is an absolute must visit!
Beyond the crystals, you’ll find a treasure trove of metaphysical items and jewelry. The shop’s clerk was very warm and welcoming. She had amazing energy and knowledge added an extra layer of enchantment to the experience, making it feel like more than just a shopping excursion. While Back Alley Rock Shop is a sanctuary for crystal enthusiasts it may not be the ideal place to bring little ones. There are a lot of “do not touch” and fragile items.
All in all it was a delightful pause in my journey that allowed me to savor the essence of Skagway beyond its more conventional attractions.
You truly can’t go wrong with Skagway.
While it might not always be the first stop on everyone’s itinerary, if you are choosing between a few destinations, let Skagway be your guiding star. My own experience here left me eagerly anticipating my return. I couldn’t be happier about the incredible adventures I had in just a few short hours. Skagway has a unique charm making it a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by every traveler seeking an unforgettable adventure.
